Flatbush was one of the original Brooklyn towns established by the Dutch. It's a literal translation from the Dutch name of "Vlacke bos" meaning "flat woodland". It was the county seat of Kings County and the center of commerce. After the Consolidation of 1898, it lost some of its previous luster. In 2000 it began to regain some of its old qualities.

New York State abolished slavery in 1827. It gave previous slaves the opportunity to buy land and in 1838 James Weeks  bought a plot of land. A community formed and it became a refuge for blacks during the Civil War Draft Riots of 1863. Over time the village became part of Crown Heights and the village was forgotten. In 1968 Pratt College and historian James Hurley searched for remnants of this village. They found evidence of the village.
