A friend and I visited Governor’s Island last weekend for two reasons—the first to partake of the Seafood Festival hosted by the Governor’s Island Beach Club and to walk the newest section of the Island which is administered by The Trust for Governor’s Island.
For me, Governor’s Island is a place where I am near water which fosters calm and serenity, Fort Jay and Castle Williams which gives me a sense of protection, greenery which offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. It has been my oasis for many summers.
Last year on one of my visits to the Island, I went into Liggett Hall pathway and saw the beginning of what the Trust was going to create on the Island. There was a fence all around the area, so you could not get on this new section. Even though there was very little, a few paths, cleared lawn, outline in white of different areas, it was great to envision what it would be like in 2014.
We walked by the water and saw that there is still a section that is still fenced. Bike riders were on new paths, people were all walking and enjoying a beautiful summer day. We came upon the back of Liggett Hall and saw a beautiful garden. There are hammocks, baseball fields, geese and so much more to enjoy at Governor’s Island.
I hope you will enjoy the before and after pictures of the City section of Governor’s Island.
