One of the great things about New York is that at one time or another, this was the place where all the action was and is. For instance, New York played a major role in the independence of the country. George Washington charged his forces here to fight against the British. He saw the British march down to their boats to depart in defeat, as he and his men claimed the city for they had own the war.
Downtown New York holds so much of our history and one of the places that is worth a visit is Federal Hall. Although it is not the original building of the New York Capitol, it is on the location that the original Capitol stood. The building was actually built as the United States Custom House and the NPS guide shows you remnants of the history of this building. By the time it was finished, it was already too small for there were so many ships landing on New York piers from all over the world with their goods. Once the new custom house was built, this building became the sub-treasury. Again, there are rooms which shows you how it was used as part of the treasury. You get to see the bags that once contained hundreds of thousands of coins and dollars. You also get to know more about George Washington's presidency here in New York.
This is a great place to give homage to our first president and to rekindle our admiration for this man.
Do visit this historic building.

In 2014, George Washington's statue underwent a cleaning.
He stands bright and shining in front of Federal Hall now.
