After the change of name it became a resort area for many wealthy New Yorkers. There was a ferry from the city to this new resort area.

Oyster Bay

Oyster Bay was first settled by Europeans in 1653. The Europeans who settled here were from Plymouth and received permission from the Dutch. It received its name either in 1621 or 1639 by the Dutch because there were so many oysters in its waters. This was a disputed town between the Dutch and the English settlers. The hometown of George Washington's spy, Robert Townsend. There are 15 villages within this area.

Long Beach

Established in 1880 as a resort community and it grew when the railroad extended to the city. It has been nicknamed "The City by the Sea." The attraction of the area has always been that it is cooler in the summer than most other areas in the region and warmer in the winter months.  This is one of two cities in Long Island. The boardwalk was built in 1914 by the assistance of elephants.

boundaries:

This area was settled in 1644 by two Englishmen, John Carman and Robert Fordham, but the grant or patent was issued by New Amsterdam. During the American Revolution this part or the southern section supported the Tories; while the northern section (now North Hempstead) were for the Patriots. The residents of this area did not want to join the 1898 consolidation of the Greater New York. A new county was formed, Nassau. Hempstead became part of this new county.

This area was settled in 1643 and originally it was part of the town of Hempstead. During the American Revolution the residents here were more loyal towards the Patriots while the southern portion of Hempstead supported the Tories. After the War, the town requested to be separate from Hempstead and the legislature granted it. It was the county seat for Queens County. In 1898 the New York legislature passed the Greater New York which formed the New York City. North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay were united to form the County of Nassau.
