Babylon

boundaries: borders Nassau Cnty to West; and Atlantic Ocean to the South

Babylon has a colorful history from 1710. The first home was built by Captain Jacob Conklin, who happened to be a pirate. He was part of the Captain Kidd crew. His son, Colonel Platt Conklin fought in the American Revolution with the patriots. He had a son, Nathaniel, who moved his family to a southern section of Huntington, but it was next to a tavern. His mother said that the area was another Babylon. His son named it "New Babylon" in 1803. In 1830 the Federal Gov't changed the post office name to Babylon from Huntington South.

Established in 1639 by English settlers, it was their first colonization of New York. The land was bought from the Montaukett Indians and in 1648 the British charter recognized the island as an independent colony until after the American Revolution when it was put under New York.
