NORTHWEST BRONX

THE BRONX named in memory of the areas first European settler, Jonas Bronck, a Swedish sea captain. Prior to 1895’s New York City consolidation, the Bronx was part of Westchester County.  In 1914 the Grand Concourse which was inspired by the Champs Elysee was completed.  This is the only borough that is part of the mainland and only one that has "the" in front of it, all the other four boroughs  are islands.  The Bronx had an incredible growth rate between 1900 and 1930 with an increase from two hundred thousand to over a million during this period.  Today, the Bronx has seen much revitalization during the past decade.
