The Dutch named South Breeze "Oude Dorp" for Old Town and it was the first European settlement. Between 1880 until 1920, this was a major resort area. Ocean Breeze is the southern portion of South Beach. It, too, was a beach colony.

Midland Beach

During the 19th & 20th century, it was one of the best beaches in the New York area. It lost its luster after World War II.  In 2003 the Ocean Breeze Pier opened.

Back in the 17th century, the Dutch settlers named it "Nieuwe Dorp" meaning New Town. It was an important town in Staten Island until World War II.The Vanderbilt family are the most renowned family in this area. Many of the Vanderbilts are buried at the Moravian Cemetery.

Richmondtown

Originally named Coccles Town because of the abundanc of oysters and clam shells found nearby Fresh Kills. In 1728 the village of Richmondtown was established. Today a number of buildings of this period are preserved in the museum complex of Historic Richmond Town.

Egbertville

In the 1700, the Egbert family farmed in this area and at that time it was called Morgan's Corner. In 1838 the name was changed to Egbertville to honor this farming family. It has also been nicknamed Tipperary Corners, Young Ireland and a few others to designate it as mainly an Irish community. The Greenbelt Nature Preserve is located here, with many miles of hiking trails.
