St. George

St. George is the county seat for Staten Island. It's name is from the landowner, George Law, who sold it to Erastus Wiman when he promised to "canonize" him by calling the town after him. The Richmond Turnpike Company secured a charter to develop a ferry service. This service built the connection between Manhattan and Staten Island which is still used by residents and tourists.

Tompkinsville
boundaries: N- St. George; S-Stapleton; W- Silver Lake
During Colonial times it was known as the "Watering Place". In 1815 Daniel D. Tompkins settled here with his family. A number of the streets here have been named after the family. In 1816 James Monroe was elected president and Daniel Tompkins was the vice-president on the ticket. He was also governor of New York from 1807-1817.

Port Richmond

Until 1696 Port Richmond was the cemetery for most residents of the north shore, the Burial Place. It did have other names until Rev. Dr. James Brownlee of the Dutch Reformed Church renamed it Port Richmond. Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt born in this area in 1794.

Randall Manor

Captain Robert Richard Randall, a sailor and philanthropist who lived in the late 1700. His father was a captain and he inherited his estate from his father. He created a trust to benefit retired sailors. His bequest was the building of a retirement home for sailors. This home was to provide a dignified retirement from sailing. This area is named after him.

West Brighton
(aka West New Brighton)

In 1819 Barrett's Dye Works established their factory here and called Factoryville. It is known for having the oldest operating cricket club in the US and it was established in 1872. The club is part of Walker Park.

Rosebank

Until 1880 the area was part of Peterstown and the name changed to Rosebank. There are two house museums in this area--Alice Austen's (19th century photographer) & Garibaldi-Meucci (who invented the first working telephone)

Ft. Wadsworth

This neighborhood began as a blockhouse (a single structure) in 1663. It was built folr defence. During the American Revolution the British took control of the fort which was now named Flagstaff Fort. During the War of 1812 the fort reverted to the federal government. In 1864 the fort was renamed to honor Brig. Gen. James Wadsworth. The fort was one of the oldest military sites.

Sunnyside
boundaries: Grymes Hill, Silver Lake, Castleton Corners
At one time the area was called Clovenia, referring to its location which was named Clove Valley. In 1889 a boarding house was built in the area and the neighborhood took the name.

Castleton Corners

This neighborhood was named Centerville and in 1872 a post office opened with the name of Castleton. To honor the colonial governor, Thomas Dongan, the post office was named after his birthplace in Ireland, Castleton..

Grymes Hill

This area has great views of the harbor and was named after Suzette Bosque Grymes, wife of illustrious Louisiana attorney, John Randolph Grymes. Before her marriage to Grymes, she was married to Louisiana's first governor, William Charles Cole Claiborne.
